Enter Yoon Ahn's Metaverse
Yoon Ahn debuted his Fall/Winter Ambush collection with flashing red lights and a luminescent globe orbiting the center of the catwalk. The speakers blared helicopter blades whirring through the wind distorted by white noise. When a journalist in the audience expressed that the music made her uncomfortable, Ahn replied, "I think it’s beautiful."
Given the developing tragedy unfolding in Ukraine, the tone Ahn chose to select cast an eerie air over the show and some fashion spectators went as far as to say even came off "insensitive."
Eerie music aside, this 2022 collection continued to pick up where the designer left off with AMBUSH transitioning into creating more futuristic and digital-esque-inspired fashion. Ahn described this fall/winter collection as “a digital universe needs to be rooted in reality to feel believable, even if you’re building a vessel for celestial travel – here symbolized by a huge sphere in the center of the runway.”
Sora Choi opened the show wearing a mini black blazer with elongated sleeves shaped by a leather corset. Her neck was adorned with a biker-like choker that a biker might wear, and a heart-shaped bag dangled daintily around her fingers. Sharp shoulders and buckled platform boots could be seen at every turn. Heavy coats are contrasted with cropped shearling jackets and metallic vests. A repeating theme noticed throughout Ambush’s show is that the hair on each model was heavily slick with gel to achieve a messy yet glamorously disheveled look.
There is a theme of black and high platform boots used in the collection. As it was a fall/winter collection, fur coats were incorporated, following the juxtaposition of cutouts adorning the midriffs of midi dresses. Clutches were the accessories of the night, accompanying almost every look with complimentary sunglasses to match. Fringe and beads swept the floor.
Ambush's collection favored blacks, golds, redds, and cow-print. The hair on each model was slicked with gel to achieve a messy-meets-glamorous look. The runway encircled a sphere that resembled the sun or a light bulb.
